Here are some tips on how a consumer can avoid hiring a bad mover:
- The number one rule is to educate yourself and understand that you are looking for value and not for the lowest price. Doing your homework means taking it upon yourself to know what to expect in terms of service and payment. Do you have items that need special packing? Do you have time constraints? Have you considered the most economical time of year/month/week to move?
- The number two rule is to use the internet only to do preliminary research, but after that, consult directly with the mover. Visit his place, check out his DOT number, check to be sure he has insurance, see if he has any affiliations with AMSA, his state moving association or consumer groups.
- Get three in-home estimates from different movers and throw the lowest one out. Chances are it's not realistic. If it looks too good to be true, it is.
- Don't pay a large deposit in advance of the move. This is a red flag that the company you are dealing with is unscrupulous.
