RETIREE'S REFLECTIONS
BY CLIFF HALL
Spring is just around the corner, and after one of the coldest Winters
in many years, everyone is anxious for it to arrive. 2007 was a good year
for the retirees and the Trans. Club. is back on it's feet and doing real well.
This is due to the actions and programs instituted by Pres. Tom Krieger.
When Tom visited the retirees annual September luncheon meeting things
began to improve for the retired members. His $l00. donation to our
treasury helped keep us "afloat". But even more important, his recognition
of the retirees for all their past work for the club was an imspiration to our
members to maintain their "ties" to the club and continue their membership.
This has helped continue our group and encouraged newer retirees to join with
us. For this we are very grateful.
In December 2007 the Club had it's annual Xmas and Hospital recognition
luncheon. Tom asked that I and Marv Hunsaker join with him
and be at the head table to honor the retirees. He presented us with a
special "honorary" retired Trans. Club pin and thermos container from the
club. This recognition by the Club for the retirees was long overdue and
to my knowledge never happened before. We have us a supply of these pins
and containers for all the retirees and are being handed out as the members
appear at our activities this year. For this we gratefully thank Tom Krieger!!!
We hope that future presidents will also attend our September annual
meeting to keep us abreast of the "our" club's activities and success.
At this time those retirees available will try to attend the 2008 Annual
Expo on Monday, April 7th at the old Radisson Bloomington Hotel. The
Expo runs from 1Pm until 5PM. We retirees will be joining with the Club
in their booth, helping when needed. Hope more of our members will find
it possible to come and join in the fun.
We regret to report that several of our members passed away since our
last announcement in October 2007. Frank Wilcox, ex. 3-M T.M. passed
away last Fall. John Deininger ex. ADM and Andersen Co. TM died this
Winter. Also, Bill Egan's wife died recently and in Feb. Chuck Wulff, ex.
G.T.A. TM and BN retiree died. Our sympathy goes out to their families.
On our sick list, Jim Hengel continues to have neck problems after an
operation. Others that had problems, Frank Wisnew, Carl Olson, Leo Kurtz
are all recuperation quite well.
Now, our Retired Rascal bowlers continue to find some way to win a few
games now and then, but have not yet found that "secret weapon", that
"ace-in-the-hole" that can bring them back to championship contender
but at least those still able to try are having fun, we think!!!
The golfers are getting ready for their opening event in April at the River
Oaks Club in Cottage Grove. They continue to look for new "blood" to help
them maintain the group. Those interested contact Bill Luksan at 763-545-3065,
or Art Ninke at 763-783-1651 for more information.
Our monthly Rascal luncheons have been attended quite well, despite
some bad weather a couple times. We have found a couple new members
to our monthly event. John Wiens, ex. Int'l. Multifoods, who has become
a regular, Roger Gehrke, ex. Control Data and Al Johnson, ex Gen. Mills.
It is great these friends have found is possble to attend during this past
Winter.
Our parting thought for now is that this column is being published in
the Trans. Club website under the Honorary members link. We hope that
all with a computer will be able to get this news and for those that do not
have a computer we are now working out a program to have it printed and
mailed to those who maintain their Club membership. We trust this will
work for the benefit for all. Until the next issue later this Summer. Keep
happy and most important keep healthy!!!
Your old scribe, Cliff Hall
The Honorary
Retirees, or the “Retired Rascals” Club was formed in 1974 and has continued
through the years due to the efforts and dedication of their Members. The
Rascals have monthly meetings- the third Thursday of the month- at the Golden ValleyAmerican
Legion Club. The Legion Club is located on Highway 100 and Glenwood Avenue.
The “social” hour starts at 11:00 AM and lunch is served at 12:00 noon. We
encourage any former Transportation person- male or female- who is, or may soon
be retired, to join for the fun and friendship.
The dates are as
follows: November 15th, December 20th. In 2008 the dates
are January 17th, February 21st, March 20th,
April 17th, May 15th, June 19th, July
17th, and August 21st. In September, the Rascals hold
their Annual Reunion at the Bloomington Knights of Columbus Hall. The date
for 2008 is September 16th. Then the Rascals return to the Golden Valley Legion Club
on October 16th, November 20th, and finish 2008 meetings
on December 18th.
